Stand-Alone Work

This page presents individual paintings and small bodies of work that are not part of any ongoing series. These pieces were created independently, each developed as a self‑contained project. Together, they offer a view of Cosima’s practice outside her larger thematic collections.

“Carte Blanche”, 146cm x 114cm, Oil on linen canvas, 2024

“Carte Blanche” explores the unspoken freedoms granted to some while others navigate the world with caution. The painting captures a man standing at the edge of a cliff, overlooking the vast expanse of the sea. His posture is open, his expression excited and goofy, he is entirely at ease in this moment, unburdened by hesitation. There is no fear in his stance, no second-guessing of his place within the landscape. He simply exists, free to immerse himself in the beauty before him. As a female artist, I was drawn to the contrast between this effortless freedom and the quieter, more measured way others must move through the world. The title, “Carte Blanche”, reflects the unspoken permission some have to explore without consequence, to take risks without fear of the same repercussions others might face. This is not a critique of the man in the painting but an observation of the world that enables his freedom. The composition, with its sweeping horizon and boundless sea, reinforces the idea that the world is his to embrace. Through this work, I invite the viewer to reflect on the ways space, movement, and safety are experienced differently “Carte Blanche” is not just about one man on a cliff, it is about the unseen structures that shape who feels truly free.
